shantytown

This week we visited Shantytown to learn about Pounamu. We were able to look at the different types and learnt about the history of Maori on the coast.
We pretended to be early traders and needed to build huts in the bush on our way to Canterbury. We also made snares to try and catch Kai. Seriously it was an awesome day! Check out the comments from Room 9 students...

  1. I liked the hut building, it was made of twigs and leaves and branches from the forest. We had to ask the forest if it was ok to take twigs and stuff to make our hut. It is not nice to take stuff without asking. We also thanked the forest when we had finished. Mrs Edward did a great job of teaching us, she told us not to touch the trees unless it was really necessary. Thank you for the walk it was lots of fun. Royden

  3. In the 1860's kids had to carve pounamu with stone. People had to build huts to keep warm, to keep the water off and to survive. Also in the 1860's people had to know how to catch food with a snare. There are different types of pounamu. There are glass types of pounamu. By Griffin.
